The waiting room at the junction smelled of creosote, floor wax, and dry radiator heat. A clock with a curved glass face clicked every sixty seconds above the ticket window, which had been shuttered since the early train passed through at dawn.
The Geometry of the Platform
Mara sat with her canvas duffel balanced upright against her ankles. On the opposite end of the dark varnished bench, an older man in a wool cap was peeling a tangerine with deliberate, practiced fingers. He placed each strip of rind neatly on an unfolded paper napkin between them.
Neither of them felt the need to break the silence with small talk. The afternoon sun reached through the tall multipane window, tracing long rectangles of pale dust across the plank flooring. Outside, the rails stretched away straight into the dry grass, vanishing into the glare.
The Unspoken Destination
When the man finished his fruit, he offered her two segments on the edge of the napkin. She nodded, accepted them, and ate in the same slow cadence. The sweetness was sharp and cold against the dry air of the room.
Far down the line, a low rumble signaled the approaching two-car diesel. Neither traveler stood up immediately; they simply gathered their coats and allowed the final quiet seconds of the room to pass before stepping out into the wind.
